While the United States continues to get in the way of any significant action on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, countries such as Greenland, with a population of slightly over 56,000, and Iceland, are making significant progress on building a carbon-neutral hydrogen economy.
These countries, in partnership with the other members of the Nordic Council (including Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark) are working together on methods of turning renewable energy such as solar, geothermal, hydroelectric, and wind power, into hydrogen, which unlike the electricity from the renewable sources, can be stored. The electricity generated from the other sources is used to power the splitting of water to get at the hydrogen.
So, while the world is convinced that global warming is real and critical, and the United States stalls, the Nordic countries are building an economy based on renewable and non-polluting technologies that may make them dominant in a future economy.
Hey, I'm sure the US being stuck on not having a decrease in greenhouse gases mean a decrease in the economy couldn't have anything to do with the fact that the President and the Vice President have long-term ties with the oil industry.
We are poised for a great shift of wealth and power, as we shift from oil to the next energy source. During the age of steam, Britain was dominant, thanks to plentiful coal and steam technologies. Then the age of oil came, and the US had reserves and technology. In this new wave, the key will be technology, and if the US doesn't invest, it will be left behind. This will be one more legacy of the George W. Bush administration. An excellent coverage of this potential power shift is available in Kevin Phillips' book American Theocracy: The Peril and Politics of Radical Religion, Oil, and Borrowed Money in the 21st Century.
